When you are driving you could injure someone or cause damage to someone's
property and the law* states that you must be able to compensate the other person
to do this by making you take out car insurance.
The minimum type of insurance the law requires is called Third Party Only.
While it is usually cheapest, most people will want to add Fire & Theft cover because it only costs a little more. Many people prefer Comprehensive policies because it also covers damage to your own car.
If you have a fault claim, your no claim discount is normally reduced at next renewal. Discount protection allows usually up to two fault claims in a three or five year period without reducing your no claim discount.**
* It is your responsibility to check relevant laws in your country of residence.
